walking down Broadway in providence last night
the rain was shaking rainbows in puddles mixed with gas
I tossed my empty bottle in someone elses trash
I’ve gone away, from a darkened yesterday
I left what I once loved
thinking I’d a stopped loving it by now.
The clerk in the liquor store with dots along her veins
her smile seemed tired and almost gone
the smell of cigarettes, arrests and regrets
filled the shelves
she’d gone away, from a darkened yesterday
she left what she once loved
thinking she’d a stopped loving it by now.
woke up this morning not knowing where I’d been
perhaps I was thinking of a friend
but i’m sure I was just walking
watching other people talking to a friend

Highway Trees
03:01
|
|||
I don’t know and I don’t see,
and if that’s seen as limited
well then that’s alright with me.
why does every hand I hold seem to fall or slip away.
Why does every word I hear neither comfort nor persuade.
It’s as if you decided not to show,
and now I feel like your useless lover,
but I will never let you know.
Like a windswept bag snagged in a highway tree
you’re a thought that’s caught in a tangled part of me.
It’s this feeling of being left behind
that seems to want to bribe me
to become cruel and unkind
and if I do, it’s not on you
it’s a product of time.
you just seemed to have me,
when that me just wasn’t mine.

I hide my whiskey so it's always with me, it's true.
I thought you'd miss me. You said you'd miss me.
...but woman, you never do.
I am the fool.
and I can't help the crying.
I say I ain't drinkin, I'm lying.
My baby doll is now a bottle tall.
I can have her all.
and when I fall, I fall for you.
It's all for you.
I can't hide my love like a bottle,
but I ain't got you. I got this bottle.
I hide my whiskey in the pocket of my coat.
Folded next to it is the letter that you wrote.
says you once loved me. Yes, you once loved me,
but sorry...now you don't. Now you don't.
Each night, I lay there and read it,
and drink my whiskey, cuz I need it.
My baby doll is now a bottle tall.
I can have her all.
and when I fall, I fall for you.
It's all for you.
I can't hide my love like a bottle,
but I ain't got you. I got this bottle.

Let Us Go to Bed
02:13
|
|||
the breeze has grown cold,
and our bottle is dry
let us go, let us go to bed.
In our dreams we are new
and our regrets are few
waking is breaking
but it’s what we must do
let us go let us go to bed.
the summer sun it was fun,
but we are lost and undone
let us go, let us go to bed
There is fear in your mouth
and gold never pleases
We are warmed by fears
in poems and diseases
let us go, let us go to bed
The day is too long,
our course it was wrong
our friends are all gone,
and I’m tired, so tired
let us go, let us go to bed.

A bum fiddles for change from the phone.
The man at the desk hands back a credit card
and tells the pregnant girl it’s no good.
There’s news on the TV, with white teeth to deceive me.
A man with a pamphlet cries, “You better believe me!”
But, I’m going on home
to lay my head by my baby alone.
I once loved this world I was shown,
but now I believe I must be slow to believe.
An old man is in line, telling his wife she is fine.
He holds her by the arm.
“Please don’t wander from me,
no one can bring you back to me.”
and he didn’t complain when she asked him his name.
“And we’re going on home,” He said,
“Where you and I can be alone.
We’ll flip through our photos, and I know
you know me. This is the last thing I’ll believe”
But, I’m going on home
to lay my head by my baby alone.
I once loved this world I was shown,
but now I believe I must be slow to believe.

A Long Wait For a Train
03:30
|
|||
I got a long wait for a train
I’ll sit and think how you sang my name.
gone are the Days
of our simple ways
and holding you so near.
It’s a cold seat where I sit.
And my heart, it wants me to quit.
But I think I’ll be fine with a bottle of wine
and a long wait for a train.
These tracks they never will meet.
a perfect distance they seem to keep.
They just go along, like nothing is wrong
until one day they just fade.
It’s a hard sight to behold
such a loving smile grow cold
but I think I’ll be fine with a bottle of wine
and a long wait for a train.
this ticket I keep in my coat
The closest ill get to a note
My words made the right line
Just not on time
Now I believe they’ll never arrive
How I wish I could lay by your side
but my heart was slowly denied
But I think I’ll be fine with a bottle of wine
and a long wait for a train.

I lost what I loved most dear
In a moment long ago but always near.
and in my loving and my hating
and my killing and my creating
I am broken by my attempts and my tries.
I dreamt of an owl as a child
who sang of all the violence in the wild
"what a loving gift is death,
that long and pleasant rest"
and I never dreamt again.
I went to see a priest who lay in bed
The nurse adjusts the pillow behind his head
and he whimpered as he prayed
a demand to be saved
and he begged me not to leave his side
This bridge over this river is made of stone
each hand that built it felt lost and alone
some simply carried on
some jumped to escape the dawn
because they lost
what they loved most dear.

More Sincere by the Day
03:07
|
|||
Goodbye my baby
it's time I should go
your lies they grow
more sincere by the day
Your eyes they cry
for a sweet lullaby
but now they are dry
as I'm standing at your door.
Sweet baby girl
had I never found
a love for you
I would have walked this world
a kinder form of you.
Goodbye my baby
it's time I should go
your lies they grow
more sincere by the day
